Sub
Surface Lines:
The oldest part of the London Underground system runs directly beneath
the surface of city streets and, in outlying sections, mostly on the surface.
These lines use standard railway-type rolling stock.Historically, many of the
sub surface lines used to be proper railway lines served by local and intercity
trains (including some of the underground portions).

Tube
Lines
Tubes lines operate in circular tubes deep down in the London soil. This type of
operation requires special rolling stock with a lower and circular roof.
Construction of tube lines was started shortly before the end of the 19th
century and thus many decades after the first sub-surface lines opened.
Notice:
The recordings on this site are meant to demonstrate how each individual transit company uses their announcements. All recordings were made by me in regularly scheduled services. Commercial use and publication of the recordinds is not permitted.
